Understanding the Foley Catheter

A Foley catheter is a thin, flexible tube inserted into the bladder to help drain urine. It’s a common medical tool used to manage urinary issues and ensure comfort for patients with difficulty using the restroom independently.

Step-by-Step Guide to Foley Catheter Care

  1. Gather Your Supplies:
    • Disposable gloves
    • Clean towels or paper towels
    • Mild soap and water
    • Clean plastic bag
    • New catheter tubing (if needed)
    • New drainage bag (if required)
    • Sterile saline solution (for irrigation, if prescribed)
  2. Wash Your Hands: Before you begin, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. This helps prevent the spread of germs.
  3. Prepare the Area: Lay your loved one on their back and place a clean towel or paper towel beneath the catheter to catch any spills.
  4. Changing the Tubing: If the tubing needs to be changed, follow these steps:
    • Put on disposable gloves.
    • Gently disconnect the old tubing from the catheter and drainage bag.
    • Attach the new tubing to the catheter and drainage bag.
    • Secure the connections to ensure there are no leaks.
  5. Changing the Bag: When it’s time to change the drainage bag, here’s what you do:
    • Put on disposable gloves.
    • Remove the old bag and dispose of it properly.
    • Attach the new drainage bag to the tubing.
    • Ensure the bag is positioned lower than the bladder to allow urine to flow easily.

Avoiding Common Problems:

  1. Sediment Buildup: To prevent sediment buildup, encourage your loved one to drink plenty of fluids unless otherwise advised by a healthcare professional.
  2. Clogging: The drainage bag should always be kept below the bladder level to avoid catheter clogging. This allows urine to flow freely.

Medications to Reduce Clogging

If the foley clogs often, ask your provider about starting 1-gram Methenamine Hippurate (Hiprex) twice a day. Hiprex increases the acid level of urine and can reduce the risk of urinary tract and sediment buildup. Also, consider asking about instilling one 30 mL ampule of Renacidin weekly to twice a week to reduce the risk of clogging if clogging is a frequent issue.

Conclusion

Caring for a loved one with a Foley catheter requires patience, empathy, and attention to detail. Following these step-by-step instructions and tips ensures that your patient remains comfortable and well-cared for during their end-of-life journey.
